Giant panda, also called panda bear, bearlike mammal inhabiting bamboo forests in the mountains of central China.
The newborn panda is blind and covered with only a thin all-white coat.
It is virtually helpless, being able only to suckle and vocalize.
Recent research, however, suggests that giant pandas occasionally meet outside of breeding season, and communicate with each other through scent marks and calls.
